What Courses Transfer?

I have already taken some courses at a previous institution

How can I determine if my courses from my other college transfer as General Education or CHE/CTE/BMB courses at Illinois State University?

You can check whether your courses transfer as the appropriate ISU courses by checking the Course Articulation Guides for the Illinois Articulation Intiative (IAI) available through the University Registrar’s website. Other tools include iTransfer and the Course Applicability System. Please be aware that these tools give you guidelines for transfer of courses to ISU. Evaluation Services in the University Registrar’s office serves as the ultimate authority for course articulation.

I am still enrolled at another institution and want to know which courses to take

Which courses are needed to make a successful transfer from another institution for the CHE/CTE/BMB majors?

A typical well-prepared transfer student entering one of the following majors, CHE/CTE/BMB, will have completed:

  • Mathematics through Calculus II (MAT 146). Transfer students must have completed Calculus I with a C or better to enter a chemistry-related major..
  • ONE year of General Chemistry, completed with a C or better required. One year of organic chemistry is certainly encouraged, but not required to successfully fulfill the requirements of the CHE/CHE/BMB majors in a timely fashion.
  • ONE year of College or Engineering Physics intended for science majors.
  • Completion of an Associate of Science degree in the State of Illinois operating under the Illinois Articulation Initiative or equivalents thereof is strongly recommended. Students transferring before completion of this degree must have completed equivalents of ENG 101 and COM 110 to take General Education electives at Illinois State University.
  • THREE years of high school foreign language will enable students in the chemical sciences more opportunities to focus on science-related coursework.

Advisors are aware that students may not be able to complete both (1) a full year of physics and/or organic chemistry and (2) an Associate in Science degree in the maximum number of transfer hours (66 h). Nevertheless, all courses which have been successfully completed in the recent past will count as pre-requisites. Students who have not completed physics and/or organic chemistry delay the start time for physical chemistry which is the sentinel of upper division courses. In contrast, students who have not fully completed their General Education courses will likely have adequate time to do so under the Illinois Articulation Initiative, though the number of IAI courses at ISU is limited. Transfer students should also understand that all courses at a junior college are transferred at the 100-level, such that planning additional coursework and/or a minor can fulfill course load requirements while completing upper division chemistry courses.

Advisors understand that students transfer to ISU under a variety of circumstances. Admissions Requirements for a transfer student with 45 hours or more are the based on the minimal requirements to start the major of choice, but do not reflect four year timeline. Please use the guidelines above for a successful transition.
