Advice for Transfer Students

Students new to the Department of Chemistry are greeted by advisors who are excited work with you to attain your career goals. While weaving your background into the fabric of a chemistry-related major is not always straightforward, the Department takes pride in the high quality of freshmen and transfer students it attracts. The purpose of this Transfer Page is to provide students new to the ISU Chemistry Department with the transfer specific tools needed to develop as a Chemistry/ Chemistry Teacher Education/Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (CHE/CTE/BMB) major.

Do I need to see the advisor for transfer students in CHE/CTE/BMB?

Most likely - yes!!

The Lead Advisor meets with all transfer students to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a student's background. Specifically, the advisor addresses placement within the major sequence for an individual student. Since transfer colleges vary both in content and level of coverage, this placement is a discussion which requires the student to reflect on their abilities in fundamental courses.

Poor performances in lower division courses often leads to failures in upper division courseework and students are often advised to repeat some classes. Students entering Physical Chemistry I must obtain permission to register for this course by demonstrating completion and/or enrollment in all pre-requisites for this class. The Lead Advisor is in the best position to interprete the transfer student's progress toward this goal.

In addition, progress through supporting coursework such as math, physics and biology are evaluated to facilitate the student's movement through upper division science courses. Students should diversify their coursework to prepare a unique portfolio for career and post-graduate study using additional coursework and/or related minors and majors. Part of the evaluation process is a review of General Education and graduation requirements, so that incoming students are knowledgeable about all remaining factors necessary for graduation.

What you need to bring to your first meeting with your advisor :

  1. An up-to-date copy of your transcript.
  2. Your Illinois State University Identification Number and your Birth Date.
  3. A set of questions about your major.

If you do not complete these steps, advisors/mentors will ask you to reschedule.

What my advisor needs to know

Your ISU advisor will need to know how the university has evaluated your transfer credit.

Just in case you missed them elsewhere......

There are lots of things to remember and sometimes it's nice to have them written down. Check out tips from transfer students who "wished they'd known that" and the ISU Transfer Student Checklist.
