The classroom experience is meant to build a theoretical foundation for understanding chemical phenomena. In the last five years the Department of Chemistry has secured more than $1.3 million in grants that support both teaching and research activities. The faculty are wholly dedicated to providing a quality educational and research experiences that prepares students for promising careers in the chemical sciences. The research experience offered at ISU offers students:

  • An opportunity to go beyond the limits of the classroom

In addition to academic advising, there is career advising as well. Students can have their resumes reviewed and participate in on-campus interviews. Organizations that have visited the Department of Chemistry are Abbott Laboratories, Baxter Healthcare, Archer Daniels Midland, and the Illinois State Police (forensics internships).

List of Programs

Bachelor of Science

The undergraduate curriculum includes core requirements and electives to complete the American Chemical Society certified degree in chemistry.

Biochemistry/Molecular Biology

In conjunction with the Department of Biological Sciences, we also offer a major in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology.

Cooperative Education

Students wishing to gain practical work experience in chemistry should consider enrolling in the cooperative education program. While working for an industrial or governmental laboratory for one or more semesters, students can earn college credit, money, and valuable experience.

Teacher Education

The Department of Chemistry offers a program leading to teacher certification within both Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science degrees. For post-baccalaureate students, certification only is also possible within the department. In recent years, graduates of the department have accepted positions in school and colleges across Illinois and elsewhere.

Master of Science(M.S.)

The Master of Science degree emphasizes course and research experiences relevant to careers in industry, teaching, professional school, and advanced study. In recent years the department has been near the top in production of M.S. degrees at institutions not offering the Ph.D. degree. Nearly 25% of our graduates have earned their B.S. degrees in fields other than Chemistry!
