What type of high school background is needed for the CHE/CTE/BMB majors?
A typical well-prepared freshman entering one of the following majors, CHE/CTE/BMB, will have completed:
- Four years of high school mathematics, enabling the student to place into pre-calculus or calculus I. Students placing into College Algebra should be advised that completion of a chemistry-based degree will take more time.
- One year of high school chemistry. A second year of high school chemistry or one year of high school physics is certainly encouraged, but not required to successfully fulfill the requirements of the CHE/CHE/BMB majors.
- Students placing into College Algebra or lacking high school chemistry should work with the Department Undergraduate Advisor and General Chemistry Instructors to select the appropriate first course in chemistry.
- Completion of Advanced Placement Chemistry courses at the appropriate level may allow students to advance to higher level courses upon entrance to Illinois State University.
- Three years of high school foreign language will enable students in the chemical sciences more opportunities to focus on science-related coursework.
