The focal point of the teaching and research activities of the Chemistry Department is the new high-tech Science Laboratory Building. This $36 million facility, dedicated in the fall of 1997, contains teaching and research labs, a multimedia classroom, an extensive chemical storeroom, a self-serve glassblowing shop, amachine shop, specialized NMR, EPR, and electron microscopy rooms, a greenhouse, computer laboratories, and an expansive atrium, complete with wireless internet access, that facilitates interactions between students and faculty.
Julian Hall houses the newly-renovated departmental office, the Chemistry Resource Room, a computer laboratory with 25 computers, two smart classrooms (one with student computer workstations), and faculty offices. Julian Hall is named for the eminent African-American chemist Percy Lavon Julian. Dr. Julian was a friend of the University and member of the ISU Board of Regents in the 1960s. As a part of the construction of the Science Laboratory Building, the State of Illinois provided $3 million to purchase equipment. Through this support and a gift from the Beckman Foundation, the Department has assembled one of America's finest and most extensive collection of chemical instrumentation at an undergraduate institution. All of these instruments are used by undergraduate students, and most are used in the undergraduate instructional laboratories. Highlighting the equipment are: a 400-MHz nmr (with a 500-MHz instrument on order), an electrospray LC-MS, an X-ray diffractometer, and an ICP spectrometer. Click here to see our equipment.
The support staff and facilities in the department play an integral role in our mission. Support personnel include storeroom staff, a business manager, clerical staff, and computer and instrument technicians that are shared with the Department of Biological Sciences. A full-time machine shop technician is also available to the Chemistry Department.
