Current Students

Welcome to the Current Students Page for student members of the Department of Chemistry.  This page has been assembled as a launch pad to navigate through the departmental website. Many of the pages included in this section of the site are very valuable and should be visited on a regular basis. The Department of Chemistry wants to remind students that though courses alone provide a degree, they do not work alone in providing graduates with a job or admission to graduate school. This section of the site provides students with ideas and guidance on how to become more involved with their major and the field of chemistry. Through things such as clubs, internships and assistantships students can gain a more fulfilling experience while majoring in chemistry at Illinois State. The menu on the left provides links to more information about ways that current students can become engaged and involved beyond just their course work.

Standards for Progress

The first item of business is the Standards for Progress.  This page is super-important because it provides you with authoritative information on what you need to do to successfully graduate with a chemistry based degree from Illinois State University.  More importantly, this page caters to the idea that a C is not enough.  There are many different requirements for graduation.  Don’t wait until your last semester to find out that you can’t graduate with a degree in chemistry.

Undergraduate Research

The Undergraduate Research page provides you with information about the research program sponsored by the Department of Chemistry.  For an ever-increasing technology based economy, the ‘in-class” experience is not enough.  However, by doing research in chemistry you can gain those experiences needed for the chemical industry.  In fact, many of the students have already taken advantage of the opportunities in undergraduate research.  The classroom experience builds a foundation of knowledge.  Research builds a foundation of problem solving skills in a laboratory setting

Chem Club

ChemClub is the local student affiliate of the American Chemical Society (ACS).  This is a student run organization with faculty advisors.  ChemClub actively participates in outreach activities with the local community that demonstrates the wonders of chemistry.  Membership in ChemClub is very advantageous for majors.  The ACS provides information on employment opportunities, national conventions, and national chemistry news.

Cooperative/Internship

The Cooperative/Internship page is focused on the coop/internship program that is supported by the Department of Chemistry.  This is another valuable “outside of the classroom” experience that is of great value for students to participate in.  By participating in a co-op/internship, you can earn credit while gaining real-world experience.  The central benefits in having a coop/internship are gaining experience in your chosen field, resume building and networking.  This is an experience that should not be missed.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant

The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant page is a must visit site if you have done well in classes and want to challenge yourself as a teaching assistant to an instructor.  You can build your knowledge base and skills as a chemist by serving as a UTA.  UTAs not only learn more about the chemical sciences, they also learn about their potential interest in teaching as a career.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available to majors in the Department of Chemistry.  Students are encouraged to visit this webpage to review the application.

Career Exploration

The Career Exploration page focuses on the things that you can do to make sure that you head in the direction of landing a career position in chemistry.  Unfortunately, students who ignore the idea of career development end up settling of position that involves chemistry rather than obtaining a career position that they wanted.
