Advice for the Non-major taking Chemistry courses
Which general chemistry course should I take?
The following information is offered as a guideline for non-majors when selecting the appropriate first course in chemistry.
General Education Inner Core Natural Science Option
CHE 102 Chemistry in Society
- One semester course of a three hour lecture survey of chemistry as it impacts societal issues with laboratory and demonstrations
- Designed for non-science majors to complete the General Education Inner Core Science Course requirement
- Completion of high school algebra is required
- One year of high school chemistry is useful
- Preparation for one semester three hour introduction to societal issues in organic and biochemistry
General Education Outer Core Alternative
CHE 204 Chemistry of Life
- One semester course of a three hour lecture survey of chemistry with laboratory and demonstrations
- Designed for non-science majors as an Outer Core elective to complete the Science-Math-Technology requirement of the General Education Sequence
- Completion of high school algebra is required
- One year of high school chemistry is useful
- Terminal course for the non-major
- Recommended for the K-12 Science Endorsement
Alternatives for the Inner Core Science Options
CHE 110/112 Fundamentals of Chemistry
- One semester course of a four hour lecture survey of chemistry with one credit hour of laboratory which meets for three hours every week
- Designed for allied health majors
- Alternative course to complete the General Education Inner Core Science Course requirement
- Placement at College Algebra (MAT 119/111) or completion of MAT 104 is strongly recommended
- One year of high school chemistry desirable
- Preparation for either
- One semester five hour survey of Fundamental Organic Chemistry for allied health majors
- CHE 140
CHE 140/140.01 to CHE 141 General Chemistry I & II
- Two four hour courses in two semesters; each semester has a three-hour laboratory component every week
- Designed for pre-professional and science majors
- Alternative course to complete the General Education Inner Core Science Course requirement
- Simultaneous placement into pre-calculus (MAT 144) is strongly recommended
- One year of high school chemistry expected
- Preparation for either
- One semester five hour survey of Fundamental Organic Chemistry for allied health majors
- Two semester sequence of four and five hours of Organic Chemistry for BMB, BSC and CHE major
What are the requirements for a Minor in Chemistry?
Students interested in a Chemistry Minor must complete the following courses:
- CHE 140/141 General Chemistry I and II (4h/4h)
- CHE 215 Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (2h)
An additional 11 h of 200-level or higher courses are required for the minor. Students who select CHE 220 Elementary Organic Chemistry should note the following courses are available to complete the minor: CHE 209 Introduction to Teaching High School Science (1h), CHE 242 Basic Biochemistry (3h), CHE 250 Descriptive Inorganic Chemistsry (2h), CHE 280 Environmental Chemistry(3h), CHE 290 Research in Chemistry (variable, 3h max) and CHE 301 Teaching of Chemistry(2-3h). Students should expect that completion of the minor will take 2.5 years minimum.
