Advice for Chemistry Education Majors

The Chemistry Department at Illinois State University is proud to be a leader in producing quality teachers. Since its founding as Illinois' first public university, ISU has distinguished itself as the premier teacher education institute in the state. The University is recognized nationally as the second-largest producer of teachers among the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education institutions. Illinois State's Chemistry Teacher Education Program is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). ISU's chemistry department is one of the nation's top producers of degrees certified by the American Chemical Society.

Certification Routes

There are three routes in which teacher candidates will be prepared for certification as science/chemistry teachers with a 6-12 certificate from the Illinois State Boards of Education. The coursework for each program includes chemistry content, professional education, and clinical experiences from the beginning of the program through student teaching.
