Requirements for Chemistry Education Majors

39 hours required in Chemistry, including 31 hours ≥ 200-level

21 hours required in Education courses, 6 hours in Psychology courses

20 hours required in Science Education Courses by the State of Illinois for Secondary Science Educators

Required courses:

  • General Chemistry I* & II*, Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry*, Organic Chemistry I* & II*, Instrumental Analysis*, General Biochemistry I, Inorganic Chemistry*, Physical Chemistry I & II
  • 1 year of calculus and 1 year of physics must be completed prior to enrolling in Physical Chemistry
  • Introduction to Teaching Science Seminar, The Exceptional Learner, Molecular & Cellular Basis of Life, Earth Systems Science, Origin of the Universe, Student Teaching & St. Teaching Seminar
  • Issues in Secondary Education, Readings in the Content Area, Instructional & Evaluation Methods, Educational Foundations, Teaching of Chemistry,
  • Explaining Human Behavior, Educational Psychology
  • 3 years of high school or 1 year of college-level foreign language
  • Minimum of 45 General Education Electives: 6 h Inner Core for any two of science requirements, 3 h Inner Core for math and 3h Middle Core for quantitative analysis are included in BMB Core
